Introduction “I think they get the message mixed up with the messenger.” -S.E. Hinton Most people never would have thought that a high school girl in the 1960’s would become one of the most famous young-adult novelists of all time. Today S.E. Hinton sill writes young adult novels, and is currently working on an adult book. Biography Susan Eloise Hinton was born July 22, 1950 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She graduated from Will Rogers High School in Tulsa, and she received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Tulsa (sehinton.homestead.com). Her very first book ever was The Outsiders in 1967; it was written about the gang violence of her high school (sehinton.homestead.com). With the production of the movie The Outsiders (March 1983) directed by Francis Ford Coppola, Hinton co-wrote the script, she had a cameo role. Hinton’s favorite authors are Jane Austin, Mary Renault, and F. Scott Fitzgerald. She is also a fan of the Supernatural (notablebiographies.com/He-Ho/Hinton-S-E.html). Cultural influence S.E. Hinton wrote her first ever book The Outsiders, set in Oklahoma in the 1960’s. “The book was inspired by two gang rivalries at her school Will Rogers High School, the Greasers and the Socs, and her desire to show sympathy toward the Greasers by writing from her point of view”(notablebiographies.com/He-Ho/Hinton-S-E.html). As a young girl Hinton wanted to be a Cattle rancher but that ambition was overcome by her love for writing. Her stories in the beginning were mostly about cowboys and gun fighting and horses (famousauthors.org/s-e-hinton). “Hinton is also a fan of the TV series Supernatural, having visited the set on a number of occasions.
