Not only do they provide medical services, they also promote healthy lifestyles through education programs (Elrich, Doeksen, & St. Clair, 2007). Physicians hire local community members to staff clinics and contribute to revenue for the local hospital through inpatient admissions and outpatient services (Elrich, Doeksen, & St. Clair, 2007). Local medical care is not the only thing that rural and low income urban areas in the U.S. lose without physicians: they lose out on keeping revenue from medical services within their community (Elrich, Doeksen, & St. Clair, 2007). Without rural and low income urban physicians, health care dollars are spent in larger cities, in more
When patients only seek healthcare from an emergency provider their care is more expensive and may be disjointed because emergency providers do not have access to a patient’s complete medical chart. In this situation, duplicate testing is done and medications may be prescribed that are not safe for the patient. The use of the emergency room as a primary care provider and the disjointed care of patients in the emergency room are two of the many challenges that healthcare providers and governments face when a patient with chronic health problems loses their healthcare coverage. One step that may assist governments in providing safe and effective care for patients who do have chronic health issues but do not have health insurance is to provide a healthcare insurance program where the premium cost for the
Phillip DeGrandis, Jaclyn Franks, Lauren Hannigan, Catherine Kassel Phillip DeGrandis, Jaclyn Franks, Lauren Hannigan, Catherine Kassel Bariatric Surgery Service at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Tennessee MPH 664 Bariatric Surgery Service at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Tennessee MPH 664 Abstract Obesity is a leading health problem in the state of Tennessee, and especially Obion County, Tennessee, where over one-third of the population is obese (Holleran, 2013). Because of the rural nature of this specific county, there are often many barriers for residents to seek the medical care that they need. In fact, many residents would rather travel to seek medical care at a larger institution than use the facilities that are available in Union City. Because of these problems and barriers, Group 5 Marketing has created a Strategic Blueprint to assist Baptist Memorial Hospital of Union City Tennessee in developing programs to assist the obese population of Obion County. This Strategic Blueprint addresses many of the key factors that Baptist Memorial Hospital should consider before
RLYT Task 2 Current and Emerging Tech Northeastern Health Services, Inc. (NHS), a health services company that was created to address the health and welfare needs of underserved patients in rural Maine and its surroundings. Despite the remote locations of its clinics in small townships along the Canadian border. This requires the rapid transmission of electronic imaging files that can be large in size, upwards of 100 MB each, via a secure, encrypted Internet connection. Lately, as NHS has built out its network of clinics to the remotest areas of northern Maine, it has faced increasing difficulty in procuring the high speed Internet services that are required to transmit the large imaging files. For these reasons NHS has brought in an external advisor to recommend net technologies to implement in order to accomplish this goal.
Cooper Green Hospital and the Community Care Plan HSA 599: Health Services Administration Capstone Abstract Cooper Green Mercy Hospital and the Community Care Plan provide a valuable service to the indigent population of Jefferson County. Blewett, Ziegenfuss, and Davern (2008) stated: The United States’ health care system has traditionally relied on safety net providers to meet the health care needs of people who do not have health insurance or who may have some coverage but still face financial barriers to getting the health care they need. A patchwork of local providers and services has developed over time to fill these gaps in health insurance coverage. (p. 460) This assignment will discuss six problems related to providing health care to an indigent population and five ways that the Community Care Plan will improve the community’s health status. There will also be a discussion regarding the five factors that point towards a need for change by Cooper Green Mercy Hospital.
Rather, rural health care is primarily discussed and researched in terms of access to services. The authors further state that, according the WHO, social determinants include ‘the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age, including the health system.’ Therefore, they make the case that research is indicated in order to assess the extent and impact of social determinants on health – specifically on African Americans [in the rural south]. Although this article explores the social determinants of health overall, it also lists the high incidence of the following among this group: heart disease, cancer, diabetes, AIDS, hypertension and
Louisiana has a long history of providing care to its poor through its state run hospitals. Recently, the Louisiana legislature recognized that the indigent care system is in crisis because the state’s nine charity care hospitals have been beset by problems such as chronic understaffing (National, n.d.). Hospitals with low nurse staffing levels tend to have higher rates of poor patient outcomes such as pneumonia, shock, cardiac arrest, and urinary tract infections, according to research funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and others (Agency, 2004). Inadequate staffing can have an effect on patient outcomes including: dissatisfaction, adverse events, death, failure to rescue, education deficits, and readmission. Nursing outcomes can be affected also: dissatisfaction, burnout, stress, injury/illness, absenteeism, turnover and vacancies.
Marketing the hospital is big business and a necessary task to bring any providers to a depressed area. But one of Kutscher’s more implicating statements is that some rural hospitals have sponsored “foreign doctors with J1 visas” [ (2013) ]. Because of the shortage, and the recruiting efforts, EMMC has become an island of color in a sea of white. For many in the Bangor area this is a positive addition of culture and ethnicity to the area, but for the impoverished, white, critically ill patients and their families, it can be a culture shock and
Failing hospitals at the brink of closure, requiring urgent assistance, will not have enough time to manage any unfavourable development due to bureaucracy within the communication channels of the new structure of the NHS (Nadeem Walayat 2010). The new structure of the NHS organisation provides power at the local councils with legal responsibilities for managing certain percentage of NHS budget. This gives local councils some role in influencing the health and social care services at their geographical areas. Local Authorities now have to work closely with other health and social care providers, community groups and agencies using their knowledge of local communities to tackle challenges such as smoking, alcohol, drug misuse and obesity. Private sectors will focus on profitable aspects of care and ignore non-profitable aspects of care, whereas the government wants to reduce the
Workforce reform should also be considered to promote technical efficacy as it is clearly demonstrate in rural Australia that shortages of general practitioners has lead experiences nurses to up-skill to provide larger range of primary care services to reduce the burden of general practitioners. These had lead to overburdening staffs with excess hours. (Duckett,
