Issues Affecting Rural hospitals in the United States Teresa Willette King College August 15, 2011 BUSA 5430-Managed Health Care Dr. Eric Richardson, Ph.D ABSTRACT There exists disparity in health care services delivery between rural hospitals and urban hospitals in the United States. The report identifies the most important issues affecting rural hospitals in the disparity areas in the United States. The detailed description of each of these issues lends a great insight into challenges faced by the health care centre in their service delivery. The list of issues is exhaustive. The report has concentrated on significant issues and what rural hospitals could possible do to be competitive in a larger health care delivery system. INTRODUCTION Rural hospitals refer to hospitals that are geographically located in areas which can be defined as rural in the United States. Demographically, these are sparsely populated and isolated from the central clusters and the corresponding social amenities such as health services by some physical barriers. Rural hospitals in the United States are facing similar issues in relationship to health care and same challenges confronting hospitals elsewhere with the nation. The 10 Top Rural Issues For Health Care Reform reports some of these healthcare issues which include the high cost of health care delivery, overextension of healthcare infrastructures and populations being uninsured and/or underinsured. With managed care, clinical delivery in these hospitals could not compete with the for-profit hospital. The resources are limited in the need to improve services, use new medicines, competitive salary for physician and allow for new technology.
