There are various symbols in the play which represents the feelings and moods through out the play. One main symbol which re occurs through out the play is the rose. The rose appears in different scenes giving a meaning which is the ability to survive and grow, giving us beauty. As I read the play and observed the use of the symbol, I found the use of the rose was a beautiful symbol as it represented hope of beauty in the future. An example of the rose appearing is when Hamid returns home and begins to pull the roses out from the garden, but then is stopped by Amir.

Pink is about the heart and is seen as a way to read a female’s sexuality or compassion” (Pallingston 98). It was all about pink in the 50s; the popular shade of the 90s was red. “Red is the color that gets notices the most. Through the visual imagery of “gathering rosebuds,” the rosebuds are a symbol for purity and innocence we can draw the conclusion that the speaker is telling the virgins they are innocent and pure, but soon they will bloom and that is when life should be lived to the fullest, for example by having sex, marrying and having a family. In the opening stanza, the composer clearly outlines that the poem has a carpe diem theme which is Latin for "Seize the Day." The line “Gather ye rose-buds while ye may” is a metaphor for living life to the fullest while the image of roses suggests a number of things such as being symbolic for sensuality and the fulfillment of earthly pleasures, Roses being vegetation they are tied to the cycles of nature and represent change and the unstableness of life. Like the "virgins," the roses are buds which are fresh, youthful and full of life, being youthful, like life however is challenging with many decisions to be made. The poem shows that life is short and life is such that one day one experiences joy which is suggested in the line “And this same flower that smiles today” and the next day death symbolized by the setting of the sun and the line “tomorrow will be dying”. Again this relates back to the thesis that change can happen rapidly or it could take years even
