Many students are sometimes obliged or need to have a roommate with another student while in college. Sharing may seem awkward at first, but it may prove to be a very good experience. I was really never for the idea of having a roommate until I noticed what the perks of having one would be. There are benefits of living with a roommate, as well as the qualities needed in a good roommate. New students are often far away from their families and friends, and may experience loneliness and homesickness. Both may also be facing new challenges in their studies. Sharing offers companionship to people who might otherwise have to face these problems alone. Furthermore, since college is not just about academic learning, sharing is opportunities to develop communication skills like knowing what you should or shouldn’t say around your roommate so that a good atmosphere is established. Both students can learn from each other about new interests and explore new activities whether it be from learning different cultural background to learning about sports, music and other interest your roommate has. It is important to realize that your roommate does not have to be your best friend. In fact, the most desirable feature when living with someone else is respect for the other person’s needs. Neither you nor your roommate will be right all the time. Another advantage of having a roommate is that it will help you on your financial side as well. With the high pricing of school, the last thing you want to do is to have to worry about how you’re going to pay for rent. With half of the rent and other utilities being paid for, the less you’ll have to worry about. It also gives you some extra spending cash for other things like books, food, and so on.
