Naomi Mafeni LCS 121 11/22/94 “Romero: The foil” Pedro Romero is introduced in Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises as a young handsome talented bullfighter who Jake and Brett are completely drawn to. Apart from the fact that Romero is much younger than the other men he has certain other qualities that explain why the others were so intrigued by him and almost inspired. Jake in particular was intrigued by Romero not only because of his unique bullfighting skills but also because of the personal values and morals he possessed. Although Pedro Romero appears briefly in the novel he is the one who stands out from the others Romero is a foil to the other characters. Jake first met Romero at Montoya’s Inn and the reader can see how instantly amazed he was: “He was the best looking boy I had ever seen” (Hemingway, 169) “He’s a good looking kid” (Hemingway, 169) Jake was first of all fascinated by Romero’s appearance and became very excited to see him bullfight. At the bull fight, Romero also caught Brett’s eye. Jake was even more inspired by him when he saw how talented a bullfighter he was. The bullfight and Romero’s initial introduction made us understand how he was talented, pure and poise in his way of doing things. “He wore white linen (Hemingway, 167)” This describes Romero as a “pure” human young man. Romero’s Talent and confidence was also described: “Romero was the whole show” “But there was no comparison with Romero” Romero’s Talent in bullfighting made Brett become attracted to him. She noticed how he was quick and stood out from all the other bullfighters: “She saw how Romero avoided every brusque movement and saved his bulls for the last when he wanted them, not winded and discomposed but smoothly worn down”.
