Romeo and Juliet Movie Review It's about violence. It's about hate. And of course, it's about love -- of the teenage on-first- sight, suicidal, mad variety, the kind that gets two kids wildly infatuated at a costume party, that gets them in big trouble with the folks and with the law, that drives them to, like, deadly ends. The Australian director-producer-co-writer of Strictly Ballroom has chucked all manner of timeworn Shakespearean conventions in his sexy, explosive, magical new version of Romeo and Juliet. At the same time, despite liberal cuts, he uses the Bard's poetry with respect. This film is an amazing feat of ambition and imagination. William Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet, as it is formally known, casts the Capulets and Montagues as gangs ruled by ruthless dons in a 20th-century city of tropical heat and lethal competition. Among the many smart choices Mr. Luhrmann has made his casting Leonardo DiCaprio(Romeo Montague) and Claire Danes(Juliet Capulet) as the young lovers. These exceptionally talented and self-assured actors carry the intense love story without being overwhelmed by the madness that swirls around them. If I were to rate this movie the rating would be 3 out of 5 stars. A graver weakness is that Luhrmann's cheeky, overblown manner fails when it attempts to portray the tragedy in the Romeo & Juliet tale. And so this is anything but the definitive movie version of Shakespeare's play, and there are times when it just tries too hard to be hip. But still, this is a film that is full of invention, and it's fuelled by a reckless, manic energy that blazes through the Bard's sacred text and, at the best moments, illuminates it. In other words, it's a blast. This is a must see movie and recommended especially for teenagers for it shows the danger and consequences of a young and forbidden love.
