Romeo and Juliet In William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Romeo and Juliet are portrayed as two adolescent “star-crossed lovers” who in an unfortunate turn of events and miscommunication, end up with their lives tragically turning upside down in a tale of love and misfortune. Although many characters play their own part in the events that occurred, some are more responsible than others. But the question that has arisen is who is truly guilty for the devastating outcome for the two lovers? A reasonable assumption based on the evidence, suggests the most likely characters to be responsible are Friar Laurence, Rosaline, Mercutio and Balthazar. He is handing her an ultimatum which influences her to take matters into her own hands. What he hands her is an unknown and untested “remedy” which she knows next to nothing about and has to trust him that it is safe. He tells her that it will place her in an induced ‘death like’ state. Knowing that she is willing to take any possible option, he provides her with the untested substance which, through further testing and more accurate measuring could have effectively reduced the death like state to a matter of minutes, allowing Romeo to ‘discover’ her alive saving the story from its tragic end. To expand on the point as to why Friar Laurence is to blame, Romeo and Juliet both allow their passion for one another to take control over their judgements and actions. He knows they will do anything and risk anything to be together. It is that bond that eventually leads to them both committing suicide. This ending ties in with the Friar due to the fact that he was the one who first sealed their love by marriage. This action he chose to take could possibly have transformed the outcome of Romeo and Juliet’s lives by taking their love one step further. One could assume that it was their infatuation that led them to believe that they would rather die than live in the knowledge that they would never be together again.
