FATHER/SON RELATIONSHIP Blacky’s relationship with his father is integral in moulding the adolescent that he is. Although the relationship between the two is clearly negative, it somewhat helps him to look past the fatherly influences, and to seek positive role models to assist him through the journey to maturity. Blacky’s self-esteem levels are low due to the negative relationship and he expects no support from his father. His relationship with his mother, the relationships he develops with other men assist Blacky in developing the courage to stand up for what he believes in. During the course of the novel of ‘Deadly Unna?’ the readers are exposed to the negativity between the father and his son.
Harmonium and Nettles Harmonium and Nettles both highlight the theme of memory. As they both are looking back over past memories that are painful, the poems feature the feelings of being helpless in stopping the hurt that was caused. The writer in Harmonium feels remorse for the things he hadn’t said to his father as Armitage states “then mouth in reply some shallow sorry phrase or word too starved of breath to make itself heard”. The writer in Nettles is protective of the recurring threat to his child that he can’t destroy. “rain had called up tall recruits behind the shed,” this quote shows the father cannot destroy them .They differ in the way they felt powerless however as in Nettles the father is feeling powerless because of a physical threat whereas in Harmonium it is an emotional threat of the inevibility of death and unspoken feelings that makes the writer feel powerless.
Night: Passage Analysis Troubling thoughts consumed young Elie because he saw the ways in which father-son relationships are torn asunder by the camps. He watches as sons deny—or at least consider denying—care to their fathers, putting their own interests before their loved ones. Elie struggles with the same conflict when his father becomes ill, and when his father finally dies, Elie is profoundly sad though also proud that he never wholly compromised his own beliefs about family. The reason that Elie finds the deterioration of father-son relationships so painful is that the maintenance of this relationship seems to be the last barrier between a world that is semi-normal and one that has completely been turned upside down. Conscious decisions are those actions individuals are aware of, but some decisions we are not aware of yet they still affect our behavior and emotions. In the play Fences by August Wilson, the main protagonist, Troy Maxson, struggles in his relationships with his loved ones, especially the relationship he has with his son, which is put into serious jeopardy when Troy decides that Cory cannot participate in sports. Troy’s action of pulling Cory out of football can be best explained by his conscious reasons that the white man will strip Cory of his opportunities, to protect Cory from being emotionally hurt, and his unconscious reasons of not wanting Cory to surpass him, and his inability to accept and understand the change around him. Amir’s past not only never allowed him to live happily in his present day, but the regrets of his sins dwelled him with grief for a very long time. With this said, it is only assumed that one’s past of sinful deeds can guide them into seeking change and forgiveness amongst themselves. Amir never accepted Hassan as a brother or as a son like figure to their father, Baba. Amir grew up envying Hassan because of the love and acceptance Baba showed towards Hassan more than Amir, “…Baba was there watching, and he patted Hassan on the back.
When Carmela asks Raul if it’s another woman he’s seeing, Raul looks away with no intent of answering, what he thinks to be an absurd question. As he’s looking away, he catches Arturo’s eyes and gives of a look that makes Arturo feel uncomfortable. In another situation, this frequent shared look (that represents their bond) might have been accepted. However because of the situation in which Arturo’s mother is being disrespected by his father, Arturo feels ashamed when he catches his father’s gaze. It is understood that Arturo and his father share a strong bond, just as most fathers and sons do.
It is Randolph’s fault that Mr. Sansom is paralyzed and he needs Joel’s help, but no one tells him this at first. In the novel, Joel’s father is the perfect embodiment for amour propre, or self love, which is described by Jean Jacques Rousseau. Rousseau states that there is self love and love of self, both which are completely different. Self love is the bad type and love of self is the good type. Self love is perverted and is a state of being in which one expects other people to give up part of their selves for that one person’s desires.
Through their experiences there were many comparisons to suggest but some stood out more than others; such as, how each writer grew up learning do deal with their family and their English, and on that note what they are doing now to understand how their English language as a second language affects others. The first of the differences was experiences in family life. Each of the writers had very different experiences when it comes to family. Amy Tan had a term she explained as “different English” where Richard Rodriguez had a term he explained as “family quietness”. The difference in the two is that although Amy’s mother did have a hard time speaking the language clearer that the average English speaker she was able to have a language with her family that was English but they had a certain bond with it.
The narrator feels that his wife shares too much information with Robert, and not enough with him. That alone is enough to make any man question the relationship they are in as well as the relationship his wife has with Robert. Society says that men in relationships needs to be in control. The narrator feels like he has no control over anything going on in his marriage, which leads to his negative attitude towards the blind man,
This once inner conflict soon becomes an outward conflict between Biff and Willy. Willy has a particular standards which he holds Biff to. Willy wishes for his eldest to be a salesman, as himself, absent-mindedly forgetting that his other son, Happy, has completed such a task and became the one thing he wanted for Biff. Willy is quite critical of Biff’s life choices, seeing them as failures, while Willy is losing his worldly possessions, his family and even his health because of said profession. Willy, himself, conformed rather than following his brother to Alaska, Africa or anywhere else.
