We are introduced to a majorly significant and complex character, named Curley’s wife. Steinbeck shows us that Curley’s wife is flirtatious, mischievous (despite the patriarchal society of the 1930’s) but most of all she is an isolated character. Her hasty marriage to Curley proves to be failed attempt to escape her own spiral of disappointment of not fulfilling her ambition of becoming an actor. This ironically is a main theme in both texts. This essay will analyse and compare the presentation of Lady Macbeth and Curley's wife through the structure, themes, what is said about them, their actions and what they themselves say.
Even seeing her own daughter, Pearl, would sometimes bring up the emotion of her sin all over again. Near the end of the book her view of the letter changed. The marriage between Othello and Desdemona in Othello was, in fact, an abusive one. It is apparent that Othello and Desdemona love each other from the very beginning. They love each other enough to get married, despite all the obstacles they know they will have to encounter, including racism and Brabantio’s disapproval. Desdemona’s love for Othello becomes apparent when she states, “I am hitherto your daughter: but here's my husband, and so much duty as my mother show'd to you, preferring you before her father, so much I challenge that I may profess due to the Moor, my lord” to her father, essentially telling him that her loyalty lies with Othello, and not with him (I.iii.180-189). It becomes clear that Othello loves Desdemona after he arrives in Cyprus, and says “As hell's from heaven!
With that, he asks her as she ever considers wanting it removed. She reply’s “To tell you the truth it’s been so often called a charm that I was simple enough to imagine it might be so.”(Hawthorn pg 230). He then asks her if he can remove it. Georgiana at first feels hurt by her husband’s request then His obsession slowly but surely becomes her obsession to the point where she even tell her husband “The attempt be made at whatever risk, danger is nothing to me; for life, while this hateful mark makes me the object of your horror and disgust, life is a burden which I would fling down with joy. Either remove this dreadful hand, or take my wretched life!
An example of a relationship turned futile in the face of marginalisation is Curley's wife. Steinbeck writes her as the most complex character, showing us three sides to her. In section two Candy describes her as, 'a tart', which gives us the impressin that she sleeps around so much that everyone knows about it. This point is further reinforced by Curley, who is always looking for her. Steinbeck portrays him as paranoid and insecure for which he overcompensates for with aggression.

My advice to your problems is simple, do as your friend tells you, go and see the world, experience other things and enjoy yourself. For your love for this girl Rosaline, will only worsen and you will only get more miserable. You are young and you don’t know true love, maybe you don’t even know love at all. I can tell that you don’t love this Rosaline, for when you say “feather of lead, bright smoke, cold fire, sick health” and “love is a smoke made with the fume of sighs, being purged, a fire sparkling in lovers’ eyes” I know that this “love” is really an infatuation, a want to be with someone, not real love.
Connie rightfully believes her mother is jealous of her. “Her mother, who noticed everything and knew everything and who hadn‘t much reason any longer to look at her own face, always scolded Connie about it ‘Stop gawking at yourself. Who are you? You think you’re so pretty?’ she would say.” Connie’s mother certainly does not help the relationship by acting jealous of her daughter, she is simply adding fuel to the fire. Connie had somewhat of a split personality.
Jane Austen Comparing both novels Women Both characters are strong, vivid, self-confident and, in some way, a rupture to the normal behavior on that time. Not only love as a feeling, but love as a pursue of happiness and stability, this last being totally necessary, at the time, to girls with lack of fortune. She had always had complications with that immense heart of hers, it was her Achilles heel. Competitiveness within the women seems to push the women to judge what is right and wrong, based on jealousy and envy as much as religious and social morals. We also see this competitive spirit forming moral judgment and actions in Edith Wharton's story, "Roman Fever", where again, the focus is the moral decisions made by women and the male is blameless. As the story unfolds we learn that both ladies, in their youth, loved Delphin Slade, and Mrs. Slade realized this and thought of Mrs. Ansley as a threat. For this, she had always considered Mrs. Ansley an adversary, "Would she never cure herself of envying her?" (Wharton, 1072) The story evolves to paint the picture of a female competition in which Delphin is but a pawn, blameless and controllable by women.
