Roles of Women and Men Over the years, the roles of women and men have been altered. Women and Men both socially and domestically are part of that change. Also, the way women are treated was a slow moving change in society but, drastically revolutionized the everyday relationship of women and men. Many stories depict the alterations within the relationship of men and women. One poem, which shows women and men starting to change in society, is Home Burial by Robert Frost. This poem is about a husband and wife that recently lost a child. They each dealt with grief differently, the wife yelled at her husband and the he coped by digging his own child’s grave. The husband in this poem is the dominate force over his wife. His wife threatens to leave and he tells her that if she leaves he will just follow her and bring her back by force. It turns out at the end of the poem his wife left out the door. This poem shows how men would try and control their women. It also shows the beginning of women moving towards independence. Another story, which shows women and men starting to change, is The Revolt of “Mother” by Mary E. Wilkins. In this story a Father builds a new barn after he promised Mother he would build her a new house. Father builds his barn and goes to town to get a horse for his barn. Mother is at home upset that she is not getting the house she was promised. She spends all day taking care of Nanny helping her get ready for her wedding. While Mother was at home alone with Nanny at the same time as Father going into town, she picks up everything and moves it into the new barn, leaving the house empty. Once Father got home he walked into the barn and was shocked to see his family living in a barn. This resulted in him going along with moving into the barn. This story displays how women start to take control, like when Mother went against Father and moved into
