• The CEO of the organization The CEO is one of the primary public faces of the organization and as such has a varied role. They are responsible for clearly articulating the realistic financial needs of the organization and how it relates to the mission. They also need to ensure that the board is actively involved in the fundraising process with the development team. They are also responsible for the recruitment of effective board members, skilled volunteers and targeting major donors. • The Development Director The Development Director's primary focus is fundraising. This is the person who ensures that everything is moving smoothly, who has the overall vision of all areas of the fundraising cycle, works directly with the fundraising team to make sure they are engaging with, and targeting new, donors and funding sources. This is the person who oversees and ensures that the organization's fundraising plan is moving forward. Both macro and micro management skills would be an asset for this role! • The members of the Governing Board There are a wide variety of ways a board member can contribute to fundraising within an organization. Examples include the Vancouver Aquarium, where each board member is expected to introduce to peers or colleagues to the development team, Friends for Life where board members are expected to fill a table at gala events, to as small as the West End Seniors' Network where each board member must purchase a membership and is expected to make a donation. Other ways board members can be involved include assisting on a fundraising committee, providing ideas for events and planning objectives, day to day promotion of the organization, assist the development team in meetings with potential donors, handwriting thank you notes or personally phoning large donors. This is just a small selection of ways in which board members can contribute.
