TEACHER ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Joseph Hutahaean “It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge” (Albert Einstein) It may be somewhat implausible to expect all teachers to be as artistic and creative as Einstein suggests they should be, nevertheless, to be a good teacher, an environment must be created that allows for positive learning. The following essay will identify the key roles and responsibilities of a teacher, the boundaries of the role and why they are so important in the process of creating such a setting. As with any profession that encompasses constant people interaction, the roles and responsibilities of a teacher evolve with time and circumstance. It is impossible to give a rigid definition of either as they are dynamic and on going regular transformation. There are some roles and responsibilities that are common to all teachers but it can be difficult to know where the roles and responsibilities of a teacher should stop, thus being a ‘bone of contention’ for many. In spite of this, one role that most academics and policy makers now agree on is that of the teacher as a facilitator of learning. Within this role there are many skills that must be combined to be a successful facilitator. It is important to be able to lead discussions while not hindering the chance of spontaneous ideas from learners. It can be accomplished by asking open ended questions and allowing for tasks that enable active participation. Group dynamics are ever changing and as a result so too is the role and responsibility of the facilitator. In various instances they will be an instructor who imparts information to students, and a consultant from whom learners can ask questions. To be effective they must
