The lifelong learning sector covers a range of learning environment: • Colleges • Training organisations • Community centres and organisations • The workplace • Public services training centres, for example, prison, health-care settings, the uniformed services. You may be able to think of many other learning environments that are not covered on the list above. You may have been surprised at the range of different environments in which adult learning takes place. Are you or any of your peers teaching in the following circumstances? • Hospital wards • Moving vehicles- driving instruction. • The outdoors- sports, outdoor pursuits, horticulture. • Simulated emergencies or other activities- fire or crime prevention. • Libraries • Workplace- hairdressing salons, TV studios, museums, construction sites. • By email or telephone- distance learning tutoring. Learning does not have to take place in a classroom, training centre or a lecture theatre to be effective. Adults learn wherever it is appropriate for hem to do so. Nevertheless, in all situations the basic role of the teacher is the same. What is a teacher?
