Role of Women in the Church The role of women in society has changed drastically over the past century. In the 1960’s, women finally took a stand against the male economy. With the help of the National Women’s Suffrage Association and the National Women’s Trade Union League, these women that insisted on making a difference in society helped women worldwide gain the rights that they fittingly deserved. However, the Church of Christ is a different story. The women’s role in church is minimum, compared to the role that men play. Women, nevertheless, do have active roles in the church. They teach the other women and children, and attend services faithfully. Although women do not get to teach in the main services, they are very important in classes for the children. As small children, a strong Christian role model is something that is almost necessary. 1st Corinthians 14:35 say, “And if they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is improper for a woman to speak in church.” While in many cases, it seems as if the man is the smarter of the husband and wife, there are numerous women that know the Bible better than their spouse. Women are allowed to teach their husbands, and when they decide to be baptized, there can be better discussion of the word of God. Another role of women in the church is to attend services faithfully. Although it is important for men to also attend services, women could do their best to be a positive role model for their spouse. Women provide so much “behind the scene” physical and emotional support for the man that often goes unnoticed. Peabody says, “Perhaps becoming more aware of each others work could instill a pride powerful enough to dispel despair and keep more of us in the faith.”(18) Women have always been actively involved in service.
