Role of law in business and society Individual Paper Toria Lee LAW/421 July 15, 2013 Prof McAdams Role of Law in Business and Society The role of law in business and society has a tremendous impact on how things are run and how they operate. There has to be laws and rules in place in order for it to be some type of organization. There are many parts of the law which is criminal/civil law, substantive/procedural law, and public/private law among others. Society may run a bit differently than a business, but they all reference each other when it comes to laws. The most significant role law plays in the operation of business and society is the regulation of social behavior, which leads to a society that runs efficiently, and ethically. Criminal law regulates laws related to crime. Crime can be in different categories are these, but not limited two safety, health, people's well-being, and also threats/harms. Civil law is a legal system that handles disputes that may deal with organizations and or people. Examples for civil law would be someone who is seeking punitive damages for being hurt in a business’s establishment. Criminal and civil law are both used in our society as well as with businesses. Criminal law is put in place to help protect against people who are out there to steal, hurt or damage a person, a business, or property. These laws are all clear and straight to the point. Civil law is put in place to assist with property damage, or harm against a person. My employer Time Warner Cable has a legal/government relations department separate from any other group within the company. They are in place to enforce laws, rules, and guidelines when it comes to the media/TV industry. When it comes to protecting the employees, customers, and any other individual involved with the business there have been laws put in place that everyone has to abide by. I
