Role of Grandparents Essay Jackie Voges Central Lakes College Research has shown that the degree of closeness between a grandparent and a grandchild is affected by several dimensions: affection, the amount of contact, how near you live to each other, how well the families get along, finances, or maybe your grandparent’s age or overall health. We should hold our grandparents very close to our hearts. They provide maturity, knowledge, stability, and unconditional love to the lives of their grandchildren. In the last few decades, studies have shown that grandparents play an important role in the development of their grandchildren’s personality and behavior (Tinsley & Parker, 1984; Smith & Drew, 2002). I believe this statement to be true. Without my grandmother’s love and support throughout the years I don’t think I would have come as far as I have. She has always been here for me, helped to solve my problems, and loved me even though I made terrible choices. She has done the same for my children. I am extremely close to my grandmother and love her so much. She is all that I have left now of my grandparents. As I was growing up we would always have so many good times together. (My grandpa was really cool as well). I spent many summer vacations at their little hobby farm. We were always there for Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, and I believe we drove there just about every weekend to stay. My sister and I are the only grandchildren so we received plenty of love. Grandparents always share fun hobbies with their grandchildren. I would go fishing, hunting, or to cut wood with my dad and grandpa. My grandma taught me how to iron, vacuum, sew, cook, and bake. Neither was yet retired so we did all of these on weekends or the two weeks that I went and stayed in the summer. They shared many stories of when they
