Understand the roles and responsibilities of the team leader 1 Outline the role of the team leader Every team should have a team leader in place, which can hold the team together and extract the best out of the team members. They would focus on the day-to-day performance of the team and its members. This would be achieved by the team leader being part of the team and still remaining hands on, and not removing themselves from the team. A team leader plays an important role in guiding the team and motivating them to stay focused within their roles and to encourage them to perform better the next time, avoiding criticizing or making fun of anyone’s mistakes. A team leader must be impartial and should support everyone equal. Partiality leads to negativity and conflicts within the team and this could affect the quality of work that is being done. A good team leader will communicate the company’s vision and goals to the team and to be able to delegate tasks accordingly, ensuring everybody understands their individual roles and responsibilities within the team. It is also the responsibly of the team leader to create an atmosphere of trust and open communication and to ensure that you are approachable to all of the team members, this may be achieved through team meetings, supervisions and having an open door policy with the team members. The team leader should always set the example for others and to be able to adapt quickly to changing circumstances while achieving the objectives, with notice or without. This would include having the skill to prioritise tasks and work load throughout the day and to maintain a good working balance between all of the team.
