Role of a Teacher I have several roles expected of me as a teacher from the students’ points of view and that of their parents or guardians’ perspectives, but as a professional, I must first consider and structure my roles in the light of the Teaching and Training Cycle. That is to say, that the core of my roles as a teacher must reflect the Teaching and Training cycle as illustrated by Gravells (2008). Teaching and Training Cycle: Fig. 1 The teaching and training cycle is an effective way to enhance and ensure that learning takes place through the delivery of quality teaching, patterned in a cycle for results purpose. So, it is a means of monitoring the different stages of my teaching and how learning is taking place. And through the teaching and training cycle stages, it can be determined if appropriate or suitable actions required for a particular stage, are being done through the performances of my teaching roles. Stage 1: Identification of Needs and Planning – Gravells (2012) states that “identifying and understanding the needs of all parties involved in the teaching and learning process will help ensure practice is effective.” In addition, she also states that “the starting point for planning teaching and learning is usually based upon the needs of your organisation: for example, the curriculum which is to be offered.” So, in line with my organisational curriculum, I start identifying my learners’ needs by carrying out the Initial and Diagnostic assessments necessary to help highlight the areas to devote more attention to when writing the Scheme of Work and planning a suitable Lesson plan for the subject taught to my learners. My Scheme of Work is an evolving working document. It helps to identify what learners’ needs to cater for when writing my Lesson Plan and how I can anticipate probable problems with the solutions that will
