FEBUARY 24TH 2010 Role of a Journalist The word journal comes from the Latin word diurnus, meaning belonging to the day. Therefore we could say that a journalist then would mean the person who reports news day to day. “Journalism can never be silent, that is its greatest virtue and its greatest fault. It must speak, and speak immediately, while echoes of wonder, the claims of triumph and the signs of horror are still in the air.” Henry Anatole Grunwald, former editor of Time Magazine. When discussing the role of a journalist, an understanding of what journalism is and who is a journalist must first be gained. In accordance with dictionary.com journalism is “the collecting, writing, editing and presenting of news or news articles in newspapers and magazines and in radio and other television broadcasts. . While this is what journalism is about, a journalist is the persons who essentially carry out these duties which could be in the form of a reporter, writer, editor, photographer, commentator or the person who keeps a journal or diary of the days events. Stories usually happen very quickly around the world, like the World Bank approves US. $,200 million for Jamaica. Modern methods of getting the news out usually come from the broadcast media, that is, the television, radio, satellite, or wire service. There are certain roles a journalist takes on in order to carry out these duties effectively. Some of these roles are the authenticator, the sense-maker, the conversation leader, the straight news role. First, the authenticator as the word suggest authenticates the story.
