The role and purpose of education in the society The educations system is one of the most influential institutions in society. It takes individual from the age of 4 or 5 for 6 or so hours per day over a period of 11 years. It bombards them with a vast amount of knowledge, attitudes and skills. These are acquired either formally through set lessons or informally which is known as the hidden curriculum - the processes involved in being ‘schooled’ and the various interactions that take place while in school. By the time they finish compulsory education. Most pupils will have spent over 15000 hours in lessons. The purpose of education is to ensure that students are well prepared and are well educated. This can be obtained when educational system is designed to provide the students with a value of system, a standard and a set of ideas. Students must be taught that education is not only concerned with getting high marks in exams or getting admissions in a reputable collage. Education is concerned with building the students characters and preparing them for their practical life. Furthermore, education is meant to broaden the students' perspective and to widen their horizon. It is designed to help them deal with problems and predicaments that they might confront in their life. In some countries like Egypt, where education is only focusing on motivating the students to attain specific jobs, the students are overlooking the importance of education in moulding their knowledge and are likely to forget all what they have learnt once they are graduated and are missing the importance of values and standards that shape their thoughts. On the other hand, those who assert that education should be designed to prepare the students for a specific job are not erroneous.
