The plantations masters thought it was “cheaper to buy than to breed” meaning it was cheaper to buy a new slave and work him to death than it was to allow a slave to live long enough and bear children to increase numbers. The life span for a slave was seven years from purchase to death. The last stage, decadent, was reached when the land had become depleted. There were no longer nutrients in the soil so they turned to less labor intensive produces such as, grains, fruits and vegetables. In turn the need for slave labor was
Poverty may mean that crime is the only way that the working class can survive, as crime may e the only way that they can obtain the consumer goods encouraged by the capitalist advertising, resulting in utilitarian crimes such as theft. However, it isn’t always utilitarian crime that the working class commit as sometimes the alienation and lack of control over their lives may lead to frustration and aggression which results in non-utilitarian crimes such as vandalism and violence. Marxist’s sometimes argue the state and law-making are a cause of crime because they believe that all laws serve the ruling class, most law is based on protecting private property. The crimes of the working class and ethnic minorities are punished harshly while crimes of the powerful go unnoticed. The ruling class also have the power to prevent the introduction of laws that would threaten their interests.
JDR- Business Technique. Much as one might like to see John D. Rockefeller as the arch capitalist crushing competitors as he gained monopolistic power, it's not so (at least according to the biography I read). He did indeed control much of the oil in the United States but he was fair in the prices he offered competitors he wanted to buy out and he was modest in his personal expenses and generous in his charitable contributions all his life. How he gain control He was able to price his product so low that competitors couldn't compete. They would then go out of business and/or sell to JDR.
Often in debt or longing for passage to America would bring people to this kind of agreement. After their time of service was settled, indentured servants were free to continue their lives. The difference between slavery and indentured servants were often unclear. Some masters treated their servants as slaves, beating and threating them, and forcing them to work long horrendous hours. Other masters held up their agreement excellently and treated their servants well.
Although the men seemed friendly and their intentions sincere, all evidence seems to conclude that the men tricked Solomon into going to the South to sell him into slavery. Once outside of New York, Solomon was stripped of his freedom papers and was whipped. He was renamed Platt and told to never mention the truth about his past again. Once processed in a slave pen in D.C., Northup was delivered
He travels many lengths in comparison to his past, and becomes wealthy. He reunites with Dr. Irving, a previous slave master of his, upon arrival in London and Dr. Irving immediately asks Equiano to partner with him in his plans to cultivate a plantation on the Musquito Shore. Equiano, of course, accepts because he believes this to be a very rewarding proposition. Before the two go on board the vessel to set sail to the Musquito Shore, they went to purchase some slaves to work on the plantation. Equiano’s remark, “I chose them all of my own countrymen,” (205), attempting to show his sensitivity to slaves and being that they’re from his own country it is ok.
They know that slaves are no different from any other human being. The reason why they treat them like property is because they want to make more money by not giving the slaves wages. The last point that Douglass brings out to discuss is that slaves do all the labor of a man. This shows that a slave is a man because only men could do those labor. We cannot imagine an animal knowing how to do those labor.
But it also had its downsides: it spread its benefits unevenly; depersonalized commercial transactions, created difficult economic relationships that destabilized the economy; depended on an enormous wage labor force, made up of tens of thousands of workers men, women, and children by the 1840s, when such labor was generally seen as a temporary evil at best and seemed to carry disease and moral vice to the nation's rural, supposedly "purer" interior. On balance, though, the canal's success represented the virtues of "free labor," and thus it contributed to some northerners' sense of cultural superiority over southern slave
This shows a lack of compassion by Birling, as he only cares about his wealth and status, and the profits he can gain from his factories. He refers to the working class as "these people" and clearly shows contempt for them. Also, the use of "these people" shows as Birling seeing himself as very superior and separate, and also doesn't want to do anything to build a supportive working community within the factory. People are seen as machines and are expendable to Birling, rather than individual people who have their own dreams and thoughts. In response, Priestley uses satire when the Inspector responds by saying: "After all, it's better to ask for the Earth than to take it."
Marxist believe the conventional families are the foundations of capitalism it does this in many way; Private property inheritance, Marxists believe that all functions of the family are performed purely for the benefit of the capitalist system. One of the key factors determining how our society plays in to the hands of capitalism is was who inherits Private property. Engles, Marx friend and supporter, argues that a monogamous nuclear family has become essential in society as men had to be certain of the parentage of their offspring to guarantee that their legitimate heir inherit from them. In Engels eyes this made for a ‘historical defeat for the female sex’ suggesting that woman were now under men’s control and just mere of object to provide offspring to become a heir to the inheritance. Marxist altercate that woman will never receive liberation from patriarchal control with the means of capitalism and private ownership nearby.
