The guillotine was a device originally made by an aristocrat, Antoine Louis, to use for capital punishment, mainly on commoners (Klein). Ironically it was the commoners who made the use of the guillotine famous during the French Revolution. The commoner’s service towards “La Guillotine” highlights the irony in their revolution as they become the cause of the violence and oppression they are trying to uproot. Another example of hypocrisy in the French Revolution, caused by the cruelty of the mob, would be the unjust execution of the seamstress towards the end. The seamstress speaks to Sydney Carton, on death row, telling him, “I am not unwilling to die, if

29 'Violence can do nothing to diminish race prejudice' In some countries where racial prejudice is acute, violence has so come to be taken for granted as a means of solving differences, that it is not even questioned. There are countries where the white man imposes his rule by brute force; there are countries where the black man protests by setting 5 fire to cities and by looting and pillaging. Important people on both sides, who would in other respects appear to be reasonable men, get up and calmly argue in favour of violence - as if it were a legitimate solution, like any other. What is really frightening, what really fills you with despair, is the realisation that when it comes to the crunch, we have made no actual 10 progress at all. We may wear collars and ties instead of war-paint, but our instincts remain basically unchanged.
It is estimated that at least one quarter of Dublin families lived in single room apartments with no running water. Given the state of his home country, it is no surprise that James Joyce wrote such painfully accurate accounts of the world around him. Joyce underwent a long struggle to have Dubliners published exactly as it was written, with no revision of language or imagery and no changes of names and places. At the time, it was unheard of to publish stories displaying one’s homeland in such a distasteful manner, and Joyce was widely criticized for what he considered to be an honest and accurate account of Irish life in the early 20th century. He stated that his intent was not to insult Ireland, but to reveal its own ugliness in an attempt to awaken it from a paralytic slumber.

In his rage, Oedipus kills the old man and his fellow travelers. Later on in the play, Oedipus’ excessive pride blinds him to advice and makes him deaf to the help of those closest to him especially Creon, when Oedipus says, “do you think I do not know the you plotted to kill me, plotted to steal my throne? Tell me in God’s name: am I a coward, a fool, that you dream you could accomplish this?” (Oedipus Rex 28). This quote shows how Oedipus’ pride makes him deaf to
In the Scarlet Letter, the effect of judgment in the society was portrayed; which parallels the judgment expressed today. Hester Prynne committed a sin and had to deal with the punishment of living with that sin. The Puritan’s made it clear how judgmental and harsh they were when one man said "At the very least, they
So the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he gave them over to plunderers, who plundered them; and he sold them into the power of their enemies round about, so that they could no longer withstand their enemies. God was disappointed because he had already warned Israel of their wrong doing and they disobeyed him. So he had to revoke his promise to them.
