Riordan Active Directory Design Part 1 POS 421 July 23, 2012 Riordan Active Directory Design Part 1 Riordan manufacturing is interested in migrating from its current legacy Windows based servers to a newer version that will incorporate Active Directory. As with any implementation on a large scale, a certain amount of planning must take place to ensure that the company does not suffer an interruption to business functions or downtimes than can become costly. This document includes a diagram of a proposed solution to the design of an Active Directory for Riordan. Riordan Manufacturing is a global plastics manufacturer with plants located on two continents. Riordan employs over 500 people with earnings of $46 million a year and is listed as a Fortune 1000 enterprise with revenues that exceed $1 billion. Riordan maintains a research and development facility at its headquarters in San Jose and currently has plants located in Albany, Georgia, Pontiac, Michigan and Hangzhou, China. In an effort to bring its network systems up to date it is currently interested in migrating many of its servers to the latest of products offered by Microsoft. Windows Server 2008 has many features that would be employable by a global company such as Riordan one of which is the use of Active Directory. With the introduction of Windows Server 2000 and subsequent versions like 2003 and 2008 Active directory is a key component of managing many users and systems. With many of Riordan’s client systems being windows based, active directory will offer a number of benefits in managing its global network. In addition, some of the servers in the United States plant locations are still running Windows NT 4, which is well past its end of life cycle and is likely to have limited support.
