Richard Speck Richard Speck killed eight nurses in a senseless slaughter in 1966. On the morning of July 14, 1966 Richard Speck entered a south Chicago dormitory at gunpoint, where he robbed, brutalized, raped and murdered eight student nurses between the ages of 19-24. ("Richard Speck," par.8) During Specks murder spree, he failed to notice that he had missed a ninth girl that lived in the house. (par. 8)Ironically, the girl that Speck missed (twenty-three year old, Corazon Amuraro) is the one that had initially opened the door to Speck when he targeted the townhouse. (par. 8). Amurao, managed to hide under a bed while Speck left the room to murder each girl. (Hawkins, par. 2). She remained under the bed for hours after Speck had fled fearing that he would return. (par. 2). She then climbed out of the window and onto the window ledge outside the dormitory and shouted: "They are all dead! My friends are all dead! Oh, God, I'm the only one alive!" ("Richard Speck, 49, Chicago Killer Of 8 Student Nurses 25 Years Ago." par. 5). Detectives would later find Gloria Davy, Pamela Wilkening, Suzanne Farris, Mary Ann Jordan, Nina Schmale, Valentina Paison, Merlita Gargullo, and Patricia Matusek all stabbed and/or strangled to death. (Hawkins, par. 2). Amuraro helped police identify Speck and gave them a description of a tattoo on his arm that read, “Born to Raise Hell.” ("Richard Speck, 49, Chicago Killer Of 8 Student Nurses 25 Years Ago." par. 6). A few days later on July 19 1966, with everyone in South Chicago looking for him Speck decide to end it all by slitting his wrists with broken shards of glass from a wine bottle. (Lohr, par. 20) Speck then had a change of heart; he called for help and was taken to the Cook County Hospital. ("Richard Speck, 49, Chicago Killer Of 8 Student Nurses 25 Years Ago." par. 6).
