Rice Cakes and Starbucks A short story by Esther Freud The short story is about a man named Dan, which moves to Los Angeles, California with his wife Beth and their three children Honey, Ben and Grace. We first meet the couple at the airport when they are on their way to their rental house. The house is located in the hills, and has a pool which the family, especially the children are looking forward to use. The family moved to LA so Dan, who is an actor, could start a career in America. A few days after their arrival, Ben has a meeting with a casting woman from CBS. She says that the caster is interested in making a movie with his daughter Honey. Dan says that he has to think about it, but when he ends the call, his wife asks him what the call was about, he simply says: Nothing… Dan is married to Beth with whom he has three children. The couple lived in north London before they moved to LA. Dan only wanted one child, but as the years passed with Beth, they ended up with three. He is an actor and is currently in a TV-series on BBC. He wants to make his opinion clear, but he also does not want to argue about everything with Beth. He might be a little insecure at times.
