A Girl From Yamhill Beverly Cleary I selected Beverly Cleary to read about because she is a well known author, especially by youth’s. She has wrote many famous books for many different ages like children’s picture books as well as juvenile fiction and young adult novels. She is best known for her stories about little Ramona Quimby. She has accomplished a lot; she was even named a library of Congress “Living Legend” in 2000. I was pleased with what I read, since she took one of her teacher’s advice and made it a reality.

‘The Sound of Music’, written in 1959, is loosely based on the life of Maria Kutschera who came to the Von Trappe family to tutor one of the Captain’s daughters after she had fallen ill. There are many similarities and differences when it comes to the true story and the musical version. Firstly, the musical version portrays Maria as a lively nun getting ready to take her vows to properly become part of the church. She doesn’t quite fit in with the rest of the nuns and often breaks the rules in the convent. Maria doesn’t have any family so convent serves as a family to her.
Setting of Amy Tan’s “A Pair of Tickets” Amy Tan’s “A Pair of Tickets” tells the story of a young girl “Jing-mei” whom has just lost her mother and is visiting her traditional Chinese family that she has never met. The setting of the story is Guangzhou China, where both Jing’s parents are originally from. This setting unintentionally causes Jing-Mei to learn more about her recently deceased mother’s past life and while doing so Jing-mei unintentionally finds the true Chinese heritage that she has always had within herself. The love they share proves very meaningful to Nell, and when Eva discovers dancing as a passion, it leaves Nell feeling very lost and shutout. Nell’s feelings are revealed when she says, “It was not long after Eva discovered ballet, when I was still smarting from the hole her dancing had carved in my life, and I think I tried to convince my parents to let me go to school as a way of easing my loneliness.”(p.22), and, “At first I felt puzzled and a little hurt, and I, too, kept waiting for Eva to give up ballet and return to me.”(p.30).
