Ribbons Book Report By Paige Robison Ribbons is a fictional story written by Laurence Yep about a young girl who is forced to give up her greatest passion in order to help her family bring her grandmother to the United States. Although ballet means everything to 11-year-old Robin Lee, she is forced to give up her lessons. Her parents need every cent they can save to fulfill their long held dream of bringing her grandmother over from China before Hong Kong becomes part of the communist mainland. Although Robin is crushed by her parent’s decision, she is determined to maintain her skill by practicing alone and with friends, but it is difficult and she feels that she will not be able to achieve as much in ballet since she is forced to quit…show more content…
Also, I think that this novel depicts a situation that many immigrant families might experience. I feel this book can help a reader understand the trials and hardships that immigrant families endure because it shows the events first hand from the point of view of Robin. Laurence Yep’s style of writing is so realistic and descriptive that I felt as if I knew the characters personally and could relate to each of them, especially Robin. When something happy, exiting or sad would happen, I felt as I were in the book sharing their joy, pain, or, sorrow. I felt that I could really relate to the main character, Robin, because when I was a small child my great grandmother had to come and move in with us. Ribbons is a great fictional novel. It is the perfect length and at the conclusion there are no loose ends. I stayed glued till the end because this book is very relatable to me. Everything that happens in this book is realistic and the events that happen are events that could happen in everyday life. This is a great book and I would highly recommend it to
