Sydney Malone Rhetorical Analysis 10/6/14 A recent hot topic in American politics has been the controversy between the opposing Democratic and Republican viewpoints on the new Voter ID laws. This topic has been predominantly centralized throughout the states that have historically been known to have voter oppression issues, yet recent Wisconsin Voter ID laws must not be overlooked. Author Penda Hair of the Huffington Post critically argues that the implementation of the proposed Voter ID law in Wisconsin is detrimental to the freedom of voting granted to American citizens. Hair argues her standpoint through logistics paralleled with emotional appeal supported by her compelling credibility. Penda Hair’s article titled, Wisconsin’s Anti-Voting Law Heads to Federal Court, was submitted into the Huffington Post September 18th, 2013. This date allows us to better understand the context of the argument considering the time period in which she stated her viewpoints was before the actually decision to implement to Voter ID laws. During this time, the Wisconsin Voter ID law, which requires a state issued identification card in order for one to vote, was not yet implemented into active law. The bill was sent into Federal Court to be further reviewed and then officially reinstated September 15th, 2014. In Hair’s article, she gives a brief background on why the Wisconsin Voter ID law is significant. She states that Wisconsin’s stance of moving forward with the implementation of the Voter ID law is shocking considering in the state’s past, it has always been proactive on the protection of voting rights for its citizens. The article then moves on to the true center of Hair’s argument against the implementation of the law.
