Linzee Williams Professor Teale ENG 121-151 23 January 2012 Goodman has brought many great different perspectives on abolishing grading into his article, to show the bigger picture. But Goodman clearly states where he stands, as far as grading in college level. One of his main quotes states, “I think the majority of professors agree that grading hinders teaching and creates a bad spirit, going as far as cheating and plagiarizing.”(p.212). This article was written in 1964. Society has changed quite a bit since then. And I believe that Goodman’s proposal was geared more towards that time in history. It would have been interesting if his proposal was actually taken into consideration, because it would have maybe actually worked back then. Plagiarizing in this day and age is almost impossible due to technology but in the 60’s, I am sure it was not that hard to get away with. Thus, proving that abolishing grading maybe would have been effective then. Goodman goes as far as to say that grading can hinder the student in ways that the student probably doesn’t realize. Goodman seems to believe it is the students and their parents, as Goodman states, “Perhaps the chief objectors to abolishing grading would be the students and their parents.”(p.213). I think parents main concern with abolishing grading would be the fact that they cannot see how their kids are doing in college. And I think a student’s main concern with it would be that they do not really know how they are going to be judged as far as knowledge of the subjects they are studying. Plus you have to take into consideration that they are the ones who are paying tuition (the reason the school runs in the first place).
