Unit 4222-201Introduction to communication in health social care or children's and young people's settings Outcome 1Understanding why communication is important in the work setting 1.1: People communicate for different reasons, to portray their feelings, emotions, pain, fear, anger, joy, love and opinions. The communication could be professional (formal), or personal (informal). It is important within a social work environment that information is recorded, as it may be called upon for legal reasons. All communications are confidential, and on a “need to know”, basis. Communication between colleagues is essential, so that it ensures a continuity of care for the client, and all staff are aware of the current needs of the client.
* 1.2 Lack of communication in the workplace can result in relationships being strained and unfulfilled, it is very important that there is good communication between all members of staff as this ensures things run well and mistakes are not made and things are not overlooked. It also enables us to work effectively with each other. * 2.1/2.2/2.3/2.4 Reading care plans is always a good start when establishing the individual’s communication needs and preferences, if the service user is new to your home then either ask the previous carers or the service users friends and family as they are likely to know and can pass this information to you, this also enables you to put this information in your own care plans for the individual. If the service user is not new to the home but you are, ask other staff how they communicate with them. When promoting effective communication you should ensure that you have all the information on how the individual prefers to communicate, and to be very aware of the environment, ensure there are no distractions, for you or the service user.

Not only do I have to communicate with all the above verbally but via email, telephone and postal correspondence. It is equally important that I am able to so clearly and effectively in this instance. It is important that I train and develop staff knowledge and understanding on how to change and develop their use of language and other communication techniques in order to break down any barriers they may face. The young adults I communicate with are autistic and therefore it is vitally important that I am able to communicate to them, this could be through Makaton, schedules and communicate on an IPAD.
Also a distressed resident may distress other residents so I need to know when it is necessary when to take the resident to a safe area so I can calm them quietly and make them feel as secure as I can whilst I ascertain their needs. Or an example of non-verbal might be a resident using eye contact or grabbing me for my attention they may feel insecure or may just need toileting. Hence I need to be observing constantly to help me care for the residents to the best of my ability.
