Animal owners are taking spending to an entirely different level, paying upwards of $2,000 for root canals, chemotherapy and even radiation. Bilger believes that Americans over spending on their pets is outrageous. He is right; in fact the amount Americans spend on their furry friends is three times as much as the federal government spends on welfare grants.

This natural urge could be taken to the extreme that one overindulges in pet ownership. This could mean owning too many pets, not properly caring for your pets or overbreeding your pets. All these overindulgences are the reasons the Humane Society of Southern Arizona exists. They are based on the idea of rehoming homeless pets, providing care for animals in need and reducing pet overpopulation. The opposite of this urge would be to not have any pets at all.

Dogs on Death Row Dogs on Death Row The Lyons City Council recently implemented considerable changes to the policies and procedures regarding housing lost and stray animals at the city managed animal shelter. The need for these revisions became evident after uproar from members of the local animal protection society prompted the city council members to review the daily operations of the shelter. The disturbance began when members of the Sweet Onion Animal Protection Society (SOAPS) discovered that seventy-seven dogs housed at the City of Lyons animal shelter died by lethal injection on January 20, 2011. The outcry against the killing of these dogs continued to intensify as an investigation revealed that several of these healthy animals died after living in the shelter for less than three days. Furthermore, the investigation revealed that while adoption for some of the dogs seemed unlikely, some were to be picked up by their adoptive families the very next day.

The Puppy Mill Plague The breeding and living conditions in puppy mills are ethically wrong, and stronger legislation is needed to ensure the protection of dogs that are being bred and raised for human companionship. Dogs are bred at a greater frequency than they naturally should be, which creates health problems for both the mothers and their offspring. Housing conditions at puppy mills are almost unilaterally overcrowded, and dogs may live outdoors entirely exposed to the elements. Dogs that come from puppy mills often experience social problems. Because of the cruelty that prevails at puppy mills across the country, animal rights groups work diligently to promote new legislation the ban inhumane practices at puppy mills.
