Abstract Millions of helpless domesticated animals end up in shelters needlessly each year in the United States. This dissertation will address that issue, along with a simple answer to rectify this sad problem. If we as Americans, animal lovers and responsible members of society don’t rise up and take a stand to rectify this problem, we will have no one to blame but ourselves for the unnecessary euthanization of millions of domesticated animals who look to us for their care. This work will cover the topics of why we should chose to adopt rather than purchase a pet, the health benefits adopting a pet can have on ourselves, and the myth of purchasing purebreds as opposed to adopting mutts. Why should You Adopt a Pet Responsible animal lovers will choose to adopt a pet from a shelter rather than turning to a breeder or pet store. Adopting a pet has several benefits for not only you, but a needy animal as well. There are millions of lively, healthy and loveable animals out there hoping for a home, so why should you choose to adopt one? You can Save the Life of an Animal That’s right; you can lay your head on your pillow at night proud of your decision to save an animal from a needless, untimely death. When you adopt that animal, you are showing that you understand the importance and value of every life, including that of an animal. We as humans wouldn’t be put down just because we don’t have a home, so why should the same have to happen to an animal. According to the Humane Society, it is estimated that in the neighborhood of 3 to 4 million dogs and cats are euthanized annually! (Humane Society, 2010) That is roughly a little less than double the human population living in the city of Houston, Texas according to Wikipedia.com.
