Resilience in Leadership Essay

From the psychological point of view, the definition of resilience is the capability of an individual for adapting stress and changes in a proper way. In another words, resilience is the process that an individual to overcome difficulties and return to a positive state as normal. An individual with good resilience is capable to deal with adversities by turning challenges into opportunities. People with such capability can usually carry on and success before the challenges frustrate them. Therefore, one can regard resilience as a strategy which promotes flexibility and greater capacity in one’s psychological aspect. One can also regard resilience as an essential factor that contributes to be a successful leader as a leader needs to lead his or her team through a lot of obstacles. There are abundant of theories and models that revolve around resilience; while research on it originally came from history of psychology, education and medicine. Presently, research is identified by the effort of promoting resilience through the way of prevention, policy and intervention. For instance, the Masten’s model clearly stated the components of resilience which are reactions and judgments (Masten, Ann S., 2001). An example to illustrate that is, when an individual is being threatened or at risk, reacting positively to the threat or risk helps to develop his or her capability in resilience. In other models, resilience is mentioned as a construct of multi-dimension (Luthar et al., 1993), which indicates that it is not possible to analyze if one only consider a single aspect. There are a lot of aspects in resilience such as the personal factor, which includes extraversion, openness, emotional stability, conscientiousness and agreeableness.
