DEFINITIONS Resilience is the capacity of a child to deal effectively with stress and pressure, to cope with everyday challenges, to rebound from disappointments, mistakes, trauma, and adversity, to develop clear and realistic goals, to solve problems, to interact comfortably with others, and to treat oneself and others with respect and dignity (Brooks & Goldstein, 2001). Resilience is a human capacity to deal with, overcome, learn from, or even be transformed by the inevitable adversities of life (Grotberg, 2003) 2. ELEMENTS OF RESILIENCE/ FACTORS THAT LEAD TO RESILIENT OUTCOMES Some of the early research conducted on resilience provided characteristics or factors that helped to identify what was useful and effective in dealing with adversities (Grotberg, 2003). The research generated information that differentiated children who were doing very well, despite living in dysfunctional families with problems of mental illness, drugs, abuse, etc. from those children who were predictably damaged by such an environment.
