Research Process and Terminology The research process is a way of effectively finding information for a research project. This can be for a paper, an oral presentation, something due for school for an assignment, or even job or work related. Terminology is important to the research effort. It is the body of terms used with a particular technical application in the subject of study, theory, profession, etc. There are seven different steps in the research process that I will go over and explain. The first step is to determine the problem. You need to formulate a question that you want to be answered. If you are clear on the question, then you will have an easier time gathering information to answer the question. If you are unable to formulate a question, then there is a possibility that all has been answered already, and there is no problem to be found with what you are looking at. Finding out the background about your question or problem is the second step to take. This will help you understand the history of the problem or question and will familiarize you different types of terminology used in the area regarding the problem or question. If you know the terminology that the experts use, then you will find it easier to research the question or problem when you come across information. Find books, periodical articles, videos and sound recordings are the next three steps in the research process. Visiting libraries, websites, buildings, and people can help you find these materials to further your research into your question or problem. The sixth step is to evaluate your findings. This means you must go through all the materials and data you have collected and read through them and evaluate them properly to see if the materials you have collected will contribute to your research.
