Ellie Grohoske Modern 4-14-13 The Pennsylvania Ballet Nutcracker This winter when I went home for break I saw the Pennsylvania Ballet perform their annual Nutcracker. It was my 5th time seeing this company performance from the audience, however I have been in over 50 performances total with this company performing various roles in The Nutcracker. I’m not sure why so many dancers hate this ballet, because it has always been my favorite ballet since I was little. It could be because it was the first ballet I ever saw before as a 3 year old, and that was what got me truly interested in dance. I can’t even count how many times I’ve seen George Balanchine’s Nutcracker, but I can tell you it will never get old, and always be a tradition that I look forward to every year during Christmas time. Whether I am in a company performing it, or sitting in the crowd with my children I have some day, it will always be a tradition I appreciate fully. We all know what the ballet is about so I don’t really need to go over that, but I will go over a couple of my favorite moments in this particular show I attended. Every time I watch this, I sit there in my seat, or stand back stage, and tears run down my face because I remember why I dance. The grace, and beauty in this variation is so elegant and unlike any pas de deux that I’ve seen in any other ballet. That is the role I want to dance some day. I will not stop until I do, because that is what I have watched since I was 3, and every time, I have cried. This particular show it was principal dancers Julie Diana and Zachary Hench. They happen to be married coincidentally, making this performance all the more special. They did a wonderful job; to me, it was as close to perfect as you can
