Audrey Spearman Biology 111-D-1 02/24/2011 Organelles Organelles Organelles are tiny structures with very specific functions found inside the cells. They are little objects inside of a cell that do specific jobs and give the cell structure. Vacuoles store energy and the mitochondria produce energy. It’s like an ant farm, inside of ant hill there are thousands of ants each assigned a special job to keep the ant hill in perfect working order. Sometimes in the ant hill confusion comes along and makes something go wrong, and much like an ant hill organelles inside of the cell things will tend to go wrong. Different problems will occur in a human when the organelles do not perform their job. The problem depends on the job of…show more content…
They are in a group of Lipid Storage Disease’s. Farber’s disease is a metabolic inherited disorder; the lipids build up in joints, central nervous system (CNS), and the tissues. The liver, the heart, and the kidneys are often affected by the disease. In harsh cases the spleen and liver are enlarged. The disease is often detected in the first few weeks of life. Due to the buildup of lipids in the CNS, motor control, swallowing, and mental capabilities are impaired. In the very worst of cases most children do not live beyond two years, in mild cases some are known to live into their teen years. The trait is passed on when both parents carry a defective gene that moderates protein sphingomyelin. The likelihood of the child getting Farber’s is twenty five percent; there is a fifty percent chance that the child will carry the defective gene with no symptoms, a carrier. Farber’s has no known cure, but there is research for a cure in progress. References "Farber's Disease Information Page."
