Andrea Yates Andrea Yates is a former Houston, Texas resident who killed her five children Noah, John, Paul, Luke, and Mary, by drowning them in the bathtub in her house. She confessed that she had waited for her husband to leave the house since she knew he would stop her. She filled the bathtub, locked up their dog, and then proceeded to drown her kids one by one. Dora Yates, Rusty’s mother, had been scheduled by him to arrive an hour later to take over for her. In that hour, she drowned all five of her children. She started with the youngest boys, and after drowning them in her bathtub, laid them in her bed. She then drowned Mary, whom she left floating in the tub. Her oldest son, Noah, came in and asked what was wrong with Mary. He then ran, but she soon caught up with him and drowned him. She then left him floating in the tub and laid Mary in her brothers' arms. Afterwards, she called the police. Then she called Rusty, saying only “It’s time” repeatedly. She had been suffering for some time with very severe postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis . On June 16th of 99 Rusty, Andrea’s husband, found her shaking and chewing her nails. The very next day she attempted to kill herself by overdosing on pills. She was hospitalized and given antidepressants. Once she was released she once again tried to kill herself with a knife to the neck. She was then given a different mixture of drugs. She soon was better. Her psychiatrist urged her not to have any more children. After that she had two more suicide attempts. She then afterwards refused to take any sort of medications. While on trial Andrea Yates pleaded insanity. Andrea Yates was in fact psychotic. In the courts of Texas, there has to be proof that at the time of the crime the defendant could not interpret right from wrong.
