Ethics in Research Researchers face a wide range of ethical requirements. Each researcher has to maintain a level of professionalism at all times, as well as adhere to institutional and federal standards. Five recommendations according to APAs’ Science Directorate, to include: 1. Intellectual Credit Researchers must decide who will receive the credit for authorship. The best way to avoid disagreements about credit is to discuss these particulars at the beginning of a working relationship and putting those understandings in writing. 2. Multiple Roles Researchers should avoid entering into agreements that could jeopardize or impair their professional insight or that would exploit and cause harm to others. Extreme caution should be exercised when recruiting students in their classes. It should be made crystal clear that their participation is strictly voluntary. 3. Informed Consent Rules Informed consent issues are critical for researchers. This consent ensures that each individual that participates has full knowledge of relevant visits and benefits. “The federal standard is that the person must have all of the information that might reasonably influence their willingness to participate in a form that they can understand and comprehend”, says Koocher, dean of Simmons College’s School for Health Studies. 4. Confidentiality and Privacy Upholding individuals’ rights to confidentiality and privacy is a very important component of research work. For example, researchers should devise ways to discuss sensitive subject matter. Additional steps are discussing the limits of confidentiality being aware of the federal and state laws, and understanding the limits of the internet. 5. Ethics Resources Researchers can avoid and resolve ethical situations by knowing and understanding what their ethical obligations are and the resources that are available to them.
