Report on the Religious Life of Planet Earth Student: Clifton McArthur Instructor: Dr. Anne Marie Keyes Course: REL 212 Date: October 30, 2011 Introduction The purpose of religion on the planet Earth is a belief system that provides humans with understanding the creation and nature of the universe, and their purpose of existence. The practice of religion often involves devotional faith, ritual observances, and adherence to a moral code that governs how humans interact with others in the world around them; it is this criteria that this paper will use to determine if people on earth are religious. Hinduism Religion is important to people of Hindu faith, which is incorporated into their daily lives. They have incorporated the universal practices of religion which include but are not limited to, house of worship, doctrine, and rituals on which they base their worldview and how they interact with society. For example, having a place of worship (shrine) is important in Hinduism in order to show reverence to a god, a spirit, or another aspect of the divine through invocations, prayers, songs, and rituals. It is for this reason nearly every Hindu home has a shrine with pictures or small statues of various deities, and many have a prayer room set aside for worship (Puja). (Fisher, 2011, p.99) “Hinduism places more emphasis on moral conduct than orthodoxy, encouraging relative freedom of thought within tightly defined codes of conduct and morality”. (Hindu Doctrine, 2004) Through the study and use of the Vedic scripture the Hindu are able to follow the strict moral code set out in the Vedas. Vedic mantras contained in the scriptures are recited at daily prayers and religious functions.
