Refractive index, also called index of refraction, measure of the bending of a ray of light when passing from one medium into another. * A transparent substance (optical medium) is a dimensionless number that describes how light, or any other radiation, propagates through that medium. Waves slow down, or are refracted, when they pass through a dense medium. Light that enters glass slows down to 65% of the speed of light in vacuum. The index of refraction is always greater than 1 because c is the maximum value of the speed of light anywhere. INVERSE relationship between SPEED OF LIGHT in a medium and INDEX OF REFRACTION of the medium. Thus , LIGHT slows more as the index of refraction increases. EXAMPLE: 1. The speed of light in an unknown medium is measured to be 2.76 x 108 m/s. (a) What is the index of refraction of the medium? (b) Does it match any of the materials listed in yourTable? Solution: (a) | The index is found to be n = c/v = (3.00 x 108 m/s)/(2.76 x 108 m/s) = 1.09. | (b) | This does not equal any of the indices of refraction listed in the table. It is closest to air, which suggests it is some slightly denser gas. 2.
