Bin Li English 68 Hight 4/26/15 Essay #2 Renown Killed Freedom The film “ Sunset Boulevard” represents the "behind the scenes" of Hollywood, the self-deceit, spiritual and spatial emptiness, and the price of fame, greed, narcissism, and ambition. Joe Gillis who is a broke screenwriter wants to borrow $300 from his friend when he ends up being three months behind on his rent and car payments, but nobody can help him. Besides, Norma Desmond is a selfish person who is an old rich famous star. She always thinks she can be famous forever and nobody forgot her. Unfortunately, she lost her mind and killed Joe. Moreover, Joe can easier get a very good material life after he met Norma, so he gives up his career. He also lost his love with Betty because his focus on the fame. Finally, he lost his life. All the matters for the best possible life is for well-being, is getting the right kinds of experience, getting the right kinds of mental states, but Norma and Joe both lost the kind of self – knowledge that many of them value because they are motivated by vanity and greed. They don’t care other things expect renown. Finally, their freedom is lost by renown. Norma was especially famous and rich. She has a big luxury house. It has a movie theater, bad tennis court, an expensive handmade fashion car and a big beautiful pool. She also has a professional butler who was she third husband. Max said “In one week, she received 17,000 fan letters. Men bribed her hairdresser to get a lock of her hair. There was a maharajah who came all the way from India to beg one of her silk stockings.
