Deahna Byrd-Taylor Religious Imagination 104K My Reflection of Religion after Taking This Course Prior to becoming a student in this religious studies course, I already had preconceptions about religion. I thought my conceptions were solid as a rock. The first thing I thought (I’m ashamed to admit), was that my belief was the right belief, and everyone else was almost insane. Now, I can say, that I could be wrong, and needless to say, everyone else is not insane. I am in the category that is mentioned in the text. It states, “People from very religious traditions, in which the pivotal values at least seem to differ greatly, may have difficulty in understanding one another (R Monk, 2003, p. 4).” That is a major impact. Learning about different religions, their roots, practices, morals and values decreased my ignorance about the entire dimension of religion. It’s bigger that people think. Now, I see how significant religion is. It is so big, and whether we like it or not, we are going to come across people who have different religious views. IT is essential that we all develop skills to respect one another and agree to disagree. Religion is hard to define it as one thing. The world is the way it is because of religion. It is everything to some people. It’s who they are. Everything they do and say can be a result of what they believe; their religion. We see religion every day. The Cross, Muslim apparel, churches, people passing out their religious pamphlets, are all common visual ties to religion. It is simply unavoidable, and thus, it is important to understand it. I thought the key part of this course was the religious site visit. This way we could really experience what we were talking about in class. In doing this, I believe we all had to humble ourselves and step outside of our comfort zone for a good cause. To me, this was a good way to explore
