Religious Beliefs of the Aztec and Maya The Aztec and Mayan cultures have many similarities and also many differences due to many different factors that played a role in their society. Like many religions that developed during this time, they had many primitive beliefs and practiced many things that we do not still practice today. Both of these cultures practiced human sacrifice and they put emphasis on praising objects around them. They would use gods to explain why certain things happened because they did not have the technology or the reasoning that we do today. They would use the reasoning that it was the will of the certain god and that is why a certain action took place. The sun, moon, and the stars were very important to primitive cultures. These two cultures had very similar beliefs, but their differences in religion are what is very interesting. How can two cultures be so alike, but also so different? The Aztec people moved into southern Mexico around the year 1300 from their original homeland in northern Mexico. The valley in southern Mexico was an easier place to live in because it was very fertile and they had a lake at their disposal. This area was called Anáhuac, which means land by water’s edge and they also used altepetl to describe their villages and towns. Lake Texeco was their main source of water and it was used and needed everyday, it was the main natural resource that their society needed to live. They had rich soil so they could grow many different crops, but sometimes the population was too much to feed everyone. Some people would be sacrificed and others would just starve to death. Their culture was very complex in some ways, but so simple in others because of their limited understanding of the world (Saunders).
