Religion The meaning of religion has evolved many times over the years. When religion first came about it meant one thing and now religion means so much more. Religion’s meaning still holds its original meaning today but is interpreted differently for different cultures and to people specifically. In our modern dictionary religion is a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe especially when considered as the creation of superhuman agency. Religion usually involves devotional and ritual observances, and often contains a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs. It can also be defined as a specific fundamental set of beliefs that are agreed upon by a group of people. The world religion stems from the old Latin word “Religio” meaning restraint. Religion has also been deep rooted to two other Latin words “Re” meaning to return and “Ligare” meaning to bind. Religion was first used around the time of 2500 B.C. people would use the word as a way of defining a certain group or cult that they believe to have been bound to. Around the time of birth of Jesus Christ the word religion was more widely used to refer to beliefs about a certain God or higher power you served. Today religion is mostly used when classifying groups of people with the same faith or beliefs. Religion can be classified into subparts. Within one religion may lie four or five different religious types. For example with Christianity you have different denominations, which include: Catholic, Baptist, Protestant, Episcopalian, and Orthodox. Even within those they branch off into more specific denominations. Religions groups can also been seen as a cult like structure.
