Relieving Stress in the Workplace Even on a good day things can go wrong at work to elevate your anxiety level an cause you stress. Many people thrive on stressful situations to perform at a higher level. But, just as many people do not thrive and may find stress a hindrance to job performance. Stress can also reduce your physical and emotional health. The ability to manage stress in the workplace can make a difference between success or failure on the job. If you are stressed, you should try one or more of the following methods for relieving stress due to workplace issues: Take some deep breaths and exhale slowly. Deep breathing exercises are a good way to ease stress. Visualize a calm and tranquil scene.. This exercise expels metabolic waste from the lungs. Learn to laugh. Laughter produces helpful chemicals in the brain. Laughter is a distraction and helps you think of things other than the stressful thoughts. Whatever is bothering you now, won’t later on. Laughter increases your heart rate and releases endorphins, making you feel a natural high. Time management- create a balanced schedule between work and outside activities, such as your family and daily responsibilities; don’t over commit- don’t try to do too much in one day. Distinguish between should and musts; leave earlier in the morning in order to ease into your work activities. Task management- do high-priority tasks first in the morning when your energy level is high and to get them over with; break projects into small steps-focus on one manageable step at a time; delegate responsibility-letting go of the desire to control.
