Relationships Between Physical Activity and Health 1a. Critically discuss the statement: Physical Activity/Exercise Equals Health There are different concepts of what it means to be healthy and how health is maintained. Healthism embraces the concept of the body as a machine that must be maintained and kept in tune and Hauora is believed that health is multi-dimensional and must be looked at through the various areas of well-being. These four areas, mental, social, spiritual and physical are said to be taken in to context when discussing a healthy person. Healthism looks at the body in a scientific way, that it can be looked after through diet, exercise and illness being treated solely by prescribing medicine. The Sport and Recreational Council (SPARC) define physical activity as movement required on a daily basis to sustain health. Physical activity opportunities include sport, active recreation, physical education, fitness activities, active transport and play. Play is the most basic form of physical activity and is often made up and done whenever it is convenient, purely for fun and enjoyment. Play is non-competitive and has no rules or boundaries. This makes play similar to recreation as it follows the same factors except that it is planned and can be flexible. This makes play the opposite of sport as sport is structured and is highly competitive involving organised rules, positions, uniform and a playing code. These opportunities of physical activity affect the different types of people, such as sport will affect all ages between very young and old, where as play and recreation can affect those older and younger generations. With this in mind it can be said that any physical activity or exercise can contribute to health, but it does not reassure that they will become healthy.
