Regal Marine Product Life Cycles How does the concept of product life cycle apply to Regal Marine products? A Product Life Cycle shows the path that a new product takes from its beginning to its termination. There are four life cycle stages that a product goes through. The four life cycles are introduction, growth, maturity, and decline. Introduction At the developing stage, a new model boat is usually in a negative cash flow. It is possible that considerable research and expansion cost has been incurred in getting the boat to this stage. To maintain the stream of innovative new products, Regal constantly seeks design input from customers, dealers, and consultants. Regal uses Computer Aided Design (CAD) technology instead of the traditional drafting techniques. CAD speeds up the development process. A Regal design engineer starts a rough draft sketch or idea using the graphic display power of CAD as a drafting board to construct geometry of the new boat. (“Regal Marine”, n.d.) The CAD system assists the designer with the weight, strength, and dimensions. Existing boat designs are always evolving as the company tires to stay ahead of their competition. This technique also ensures the designer that all of the parts will fit together. A steady stream of products is required due to the short life cycle. With Regal having several successful boats in the past, designers and production personnel are stressed to produce these products rapidly. The life cycle for a successful boat is three to five years. (“Regal Marine”, n.d.) Growth The Growth Stage is characterized by rapid growth in sales and profits. Regal encourages key suppliers to get on board early.
