Refugee Children in the UK

Civil wars and armed conflicts around the Middle East and some parts of Africa have led to massive displacement of citizens. The displaced citizens of these countries seek refuge in other countries such as the United Kingdom which is affiliated with the 1957 Geneva Refugee Convention. This convention was formulated with an aim of integrating refugees and asylum seekers from insecure regions. Consequently, the number of asylum-seekers and refugee children in the UK has increased greatly in the recent decade. This essay will identify the barriers encountered by asylum seekers and refugee children when attempting to access formal education in the UK and possible solutions.

Most of the asylum-seekers and refuge children in the UK today are especially from countries like Turkey, Somalia, Afghanistan, China, India, Iran and former Republic of Yugoslavia among others (Refugee Council, 2011, pp. 1). However, strict immigration legislations by the UK government have caused the number of refugees and asylum seekers to reduce. These legislations have locked out those applicants who do not attain the status of being recognised as asylum seekers or refugees. For instance, it was estimated that in 2003 the number of refugees and asylum seekers accepted by UK government dropped significantly by 42% due to a newly adopted legislation system. However, many of the accepted refugees and asylum seekers were children. For instance, out of 10, 640 applicants who had dependents, 81% of the dependents were children. Moreover, these children were aged below eighteen years. In addition, a recent UK legislation has put further restrictions to the entitlement of refugees and those seeking asylum. The legislation has also regulated the social services that are accessible to refugees and the asylum seekers.
