Madeleine Otis Badminton 06/04/2014 Badminton Reflective Essay This course in badminton allowed me to better understand the sport itself along with the rules and regulations. Knowing proper court dimensions, rules, and overall strategic play was good to know so that I can use the badminton set at home to a more proper utilization. I was also able to better understand my skill set when it came to this sport and how I can improve on areas that need more work. My strengths are hitting forehand, serving long, and placement of the birdie. These skills allowed me to be successful in the course and allowed some competitive nature. My weaknesses involved backhand shots, movement in the court, and need for better eye-hand coordination. Through the course of two weeks, I feel my skill set did improve and I hope to improve it more through the course of my life. Badminton is a great sport that utilized both the FITT principle and health-related fitness. The frequency of this course was very high for having more than 60 minutes of play for two weeks straight. This is an excellent amount of physical activity for a day to day amount of exercise. It was important to have this daily physical activity, however difficult to play for the entire hour and a half. Even so, it was beneficial because we were able to take breaks and play with the intensity that we wished. With higher intensity came a higher heart rate, and overall better cardiovascular health. The time we spent was close to the hour mark; based on the intensity we played with varied how spent we were by the end of the course allotted time. The type of fitness that badminton allowed was a combination of cardiovascular, flexibility, as well as strength. The intensity and movement allows for the elevated heart rate. The flexibility of being able to extend the arms and lunge the legs allows for higher quality
