I love working in ob/gyn department but it doesn’t stop me from helping in primary care, the rehab facility or the pride health. I might be more sensitive to a certain population but I am there to serve and help all clients. Growing up was not easy, since I was raise by my aunt with her in laws I do understand been alone, hurt, unwanted, been verbally and physically abuse, mistreated or been jealous of. In that case having an abuse family member can have me take the case a little at hear due to what I been through in the past year .I learn how to forgive and use what I experienced to be a good cause. I see me as a family and child counselor, an advocate trying to help and prevent kids, adolescent, young adult not to carry anger, pain, hurt or more towards the person that mistreated them.
After getting my results I reviewed my report and I went back to the book Strengths based Leadership by Rath and Conchie for further insight. As I read and explored the definitions of my strengths I was not surprised by some of my strengths but at the same time was a little in shock that I was not more rounded. I learned that I am strongly based in relationship building which as a psychiatric nurse and as an educator this is not shocking. I need to be aware that my strengths can also be my down fall, my strength of belief can set me up to have judgments and be set in stone with my beliefs. I need to be aware and try to be more flexible, this not easy due to my strong military background.
Both similarities and differences in these approaches will be brought to light and I will conclude with personal reflection. Motivational Interviewing came about initially as a way to help people dealing with substance abuse and addiction problems. Bill Miller and Steve Rollnick are the therapists that created Motivational Interviewing in the late 1970’s. To give background, in the late 1970’s the only requirement by the state to provide addiction counseling was that the provider be in recovery him/herself. This was because we had almost no research on what addiction actually was; therefore, we could not possibly introduce successful treatment modalities.

Hi Tahira, I’m really looking forward to you coming and working with me on your placement. As this is your first placement I’m will be giving you some advice on what barriers to effective communication with a care user you will encounter regularly at the residential home. Here are the main ones that I frequently encounter with the residents: sensory deprivation, someone’s whose first language is not English and slang. Hopefully this email will help you if you encounter such barriers. Sensory deprivation is when someone cannot receive or pass on information because they have impairment to one or more of their senses, most commonly a visual or a hearing disability; such a barrier can affect communication because if the person is deaf he will not be able to understand what you are saying.
It’s not he/she place to discriminate, or to treat Sandra differently because beliefs are different. Growing up we were always taught to treat others as you want to be treated. In healthcare I feel it is a lot different. It’s your job to always treat the patient with respect and understand their needs and wants. Although Sandra was not conscious and could not make choices herself, the staff tried contacting her next of kin, when they were unreachable they took matters into their own hands to help Sandra.

Windy Dryden (2006) says it is basically a person’s desire to rid themself of some kind of personal pain due to life’s adversities, or character traits which may be hindering a fulfilling life (p.5). She also notes that attending counselling as a course requirement should be considered a legitimate reason. (p.5) As a course requirement I attended a counselling session with Annie Rabin, a professional counsellor. McLeod (2003) says clients want to resolve something, learn something or achieve social inclusion. (p.16) My primary aim was to learn but I also achieved a measure of resolve with my problem.
