Reflections on Community Organizing 2 HUSB 130/81 Charles Johnson Kamika Lynette Bost, M.Ed "Some men see things as they are and say Why. I dream things that never were and say Why not." — Robert F. Kennedy That statement above always stays in my mind. Bobby has had an effect on my live that no other except Jesus Christ has. He is my favorite Kennedy and I became involved in politics’ because of him. The compassion for those who were less fortunate, willing to go the distinct for the helpless, being involved in community organizing and politics all come from my research and respect of Bobby. As I have mentioned I was a member of Wilmington United Neighborhoods. “W.U.N” was a community organization that was founded in the early 1970’s. I was a member from 1981-1984. I believe a lot of people got involved because of “cold anger” upset with the way things were going on, looking to make change happen, angry that they have no job, angry that they have no decent home of just angry over certain conditions. It could be a stop sign, school conditions ,toxic waste anything can start to burn in you as a “cold anger I worked closely with the employment group, organizing the community to use their power to demand employment. I also was proud of being a part of W.U.N’S winning 12 houses from the city of Wilmington. A lot of things happened at W.U.N just like the book talked about. A lot of leaders came through W.U.N. I like what chapter 7 said’” the way to develop power is to develop leaders” (Pages187). It’s very true that a leader comes in all shapes and sizes, and colors and all backgrounds. You never know who will become the leader in the organization. To find your leaders you need people. Good
